Nita Ambani was recently appointed as the Co-chair of the Board of Trustees of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Film Festival. Apart from being a Non-Executive and Non-Independent Director of Reliance Industries Limited, she is the Chairperson and Founder of its philanthropic arm, Reliance Foundation. She is also the Chairperson of IMG-Reliance, which is one of the important stakeholders of the popular football league, Indian Super League (ISL).

At a press meet, Ambani spoke out after the unveiling of the Jio MAMI trophy for 2015. She said that she was honored by the faith that the MAMI Board of Trustees placed in her. She thanked them for her appointment and expressed the belief that the Jio MAMI Film Festival will exhibit some of the best pieces from Indian, as well as global cinema.
Ambani also said that Jio MAMI should be identified as one of the best film festivals in the world. “We are convinced that Jio will have a lot to do with films, and films will have a lot to do with Jio,” she added.
Members of the Board of Trustees of MAMI were also present at the meet. This included famous film directors like Vishal Bhardwaj, Kiran Rao and Dibakar Banerjee, along with renowned film critic, Anupama Chopra, among others. In addition to Ambani, Kiran Rao is also the Co-chair of the festival.
Anupama Chopra is the Festival Director. She said, "Our aim is to create a movie-soaked week in which you can see the best of Indian and international cinema.” She also said that the festival wants to promote cultural exchange, boost interactions and create a cinematic sensibility.
She feels that the festival has reached the present height due to the kindness of a number of people. She thanked their main sponsor Jio, associate sponsor STAR India and the third partner, the Government of Maharashtra.
The Members of the Board of Trustees of MAMI Film Festival were also announced at the event. The new list includes names of popular directors like Zoya Akhtar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee and Vikramaditya Motwane, along withnoted actors such as Riteish Deshmukh, Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone.
MAMI Film Festival
In 1997, the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee, along with many popular personalities of the film industry founded MAMI as a non-profit trust. The trust then began to organize MAMI Film Festival. It has been doing so since the past 16 years with an aim to enhance the climate of good cinema.
The forthcomingJio MAMI Film Festival is the 17th Film Festival. The week-long festival will be held at Mumbai from 29th October to 5th November.
A new feature known as ‘Half Ticket’ has been introduced forthis year’s festival. This feature is designed for children. Documentaries, short films, live-action and animation movies, made for children, from across the globe will be screened for these young audiences. Children’s jury awards will be presented to the best ones. Additionally, there will be a special interactive session,in which children may learn about filmmaking from established directors and writers.
