Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has yet another reason to celebrate. Apart from the fact that the company’s telecom and electronic venture is gaining momentum, the company’s head honcho has recently been awarded the Othmer Gold Medal for his noteworthy contribution towards the growth of the oil refining industry in India.
Jamnagar refinery
The Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat stands testimony to this exponentially developing petroleum sector in the country. The factory run under Mukesh Ambani is now deemed the biggest petroleum refinery in the world. The prestigious title is befitting owing to his participation in major oil and gas projects.
Othmer Gold Medal
The Othmer Gold Medal is an initiative by the Chemical Heritage Foundation to honor entrepreneurs across diverse fields. The Othmer Gold Medal was established in memory of the renowned Donald Othmer, the co-editor of Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology and a well known professor, inventor, philanthropist, researcher, engineer and consultant.

It particularly recognizes noteworthy work in areas like education, innovation, research, philanthropy, public understanding and legislation. The Chemical Heritage Foundation has been acknowledging such talented individuals through the award since 1997.The award ceremony that is held every year is co-sponsored by organizations like the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF), The Chemist’s Club, The American Chemical Society and the Sociètè de Chimie Industrielle.

The prestigious award was presented to Mr. Ambani by industry greats like Mr. Carsten Reinhardt (President of Chemical Heritage Foundation) and Mr. Raj Gupta (Chairman of Delphi Automotive) who graced the event. The event marked the Heritage Day of the Chemical Foundation which added exuberance to the event.
Dinner to celebrate success
Post the event, the Reliance Industries Chairman was treated to a dinner hosted by none other than Tom Ridge, a former secretary of Homeland Security and the current Governor of Pennsylvania. Mr. Ambani, on the occasion dedicated the award to his late father, the renowned Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani. He reminisced about the support he received from him in taking up chemical engineering despite Reliance dealing in the textile industry at the time.
Welfare of people
There was much more to the event besides the common business banter. Mr. Ambani set the mood for the occasion by addressing the welfare of people in the US and India. With reference to the same he stated his determination to see the two nations work towards the common goal of prosperity and peace.
India-US partnership
He put forth his view of a better future for both nations by alluding to the emergence of two wars, namely- a war for wealth and a war for talent or security. He stated that a consolidation between the two nations could prove beneficial in such a phase.
